Abstract:
Co-opetition is a relatively new but rapidly growing phenomenon in the global economy. This phenomenon is increasingly gaining importance, covering the entire world economy. This applies mostly to the high-tech sectors.
The coopetition concept was introduced in the 90s. as a combination of two concepts: cooperation and competition. Etymologically, the coopetition is a combination of two terms: cooperation and competition. The complexity of the phenomenon is the simultaneous implementation of two contradictory logics of the relationships between the companies: trust, which is a manifestation of a community of interests and conflicts of interest. In other words, we observe a simultaneous occurrence of relations of cooperation and rivalry between competitors.
Literature in the field of co-opetition identifies only the presence of streams of cooperation and competition. It does not indicate, however, in which areas (functions in the value chain) the companies decide to cooperate with their rivals. Therefore the goal of this paper is the identification of the boundaries of the cooperation stream in the coopetition. Taking into account the analysis of the world literature and quantitative research on the sample of more than 200 companies operating in the high-tech sectors in Poland, the area of the competitive cooperation will be described.
The data for this paper were gathered on the basis of the questionnaire research. The authors also present the areas dominated by cooperation, taking into account the type of activities in the value chain (primary and secondary) and their multiplicity. The results will be the basis for the verification of views of M. Bengtsson and S. Kock, devoted to the dominance of cooperation in activities supporting the value chains of the parties involved in the coopetitive relationships. The views of these authors were not supported by the quantitative research. The originality of the article is also the result of the presentation of unique quantitative research related to the characteristics of the areas of cooperation in the coopetitive relationships. An another advantage is the fact that such research are rare not only in Poland, but also in the international scale.
